“You must try the delicious ramen soups,” we’re told before heading to Akakiko Nicosia on a breezy yet sun filled November lunchtime. Located in the Engomi area of the capital adjacent to the Hilton Park Hotel, it’s the perfect spot for a work lunch or a just a lunch break!
And come evening, the restaurant is lit up in fabulous fashion, accentuating a classy, simple, yet warm streamlined and modern interior reflecting minimalist Japanese aesthetics. Whether you want to take a seat by the bar, on one of the tables, or kick back in the comfy couch area, the chill out music that plays in the background will certainly make the experience all the more relaxing.
Once seated in the relaxing raised couch area, we were warmly welcomed as we were taken through some of the most popular dishes on the impressive menu. A Japanese fusion restaurant, the emphasis is on simple healthy cuisine, from fresh sushi, sashimi and maki, to starters such as popcorn shrimp, dim sum, Thai calamari and sweet potato wontons, topped off with delicious hot dishes such as sweet and sour duck and veal chop Teppanyaki.
As the cooler weather slowly sets in as we approach December, our friendly waiter points toward the Ramen soups, with a choice of Miso Shiru (traditional Japanese soup with fermented soybean paste and tofu cubes, with spring onions and seaweed), sweet and sour soup with chicken, duck, egg and mushrooms and Tomyam seafood soup; a Thai style soup with prawns, lemongrass, chilli peppers, mushroom and celery.
Then there are the delicious Udon Ramen bowls; the perfect comfort food and pick-me-up! We opted for the healthy Udon vegetables (a delicious and rather large steaming bowl of Udon with vegetables and egg) but there’s also ramen seafood, ramen with duck and a miso chicken bowl.
Given that we managed to slip away from the office for about an hour, the waiter also talks us through the ‘Quick Lunch’ option, priced at only €8.90 and including two dishes of your choice from a special menu. Available from Monday to Friday, there’s plenty to choose from including the super healthy edamame beans and sake and avocado/cucumber maki, to wonton pork, gyoza dumplings and many more to tantalise those taste buds. For seconds, there’s udon pork, douban tofou, yakiniku fishfried rice, sweet and sour crab salad and the list goes on.
Aside from the ‘Quick Lunch’ menu, Akakiko caters to a wide range of tastes, with a faultless service complementing the gastronomic experience. There’s sushi in just about every variety possible, maki to make you drool, and a wide selection of hot dishes, whether you love chicken, beef or have a soft spot for vegetables.
Fancy something different to drink? If you head to the venue at the end of a busy day, you may be inclined to order an ice cold Sapporo. Take note that Akakiko will be greeting the New Year with a new menu filled with tasty delights…watch this space!
