Forget stuffy bars and crowded patios this summer, it’s time to shimmy and shake out in the countryside! From the highest peaks of the rugged Troodos mountains, to quaint traditional villages and magical forest lands, just about every part of the country will be a wearing a party hat over the next few months. And if you’re wondering which outdoor event is most up your street, the My Cyprus Insider team has compiled a guide to 5 of the best that we believe deserve special attention.



1. Nostalgia Weekend Party, Forest Park Hotel, Platres

A blast from the past

How about partying the night away on the island’s highest heights? Head up to the cool Troodos mountains next weekend (Saturday 24th – Sunday 25th)  for a really unusual event which will come to life within the historic Forest Park Hotel in Platres (one of the oldest hotels on the island famed for creating the Brandy Sour cocktail). Nostalgia Parties have reserved the entire hotel for a Saturday night party in the ballroom, followed by breakfast on the terrace and a day party by the gorgeous swimming pool set within forested grounds on the Sunday.



Taking you on a really memorable journey back in time, you can groove to 1930s-70s Jazz, Blues, Soul, Rock n Roll, Swing & Disco – the golden years of the hotel – with Djs Claudio, Mr Fox & Eugene Kaal. To enjoy the full Nostalgia Party experience, you can make a night of it and book a room in the hotel, with an all-inclusive deal which includes a ticket to the night time part (with open bar). Two-thirds of the hotel has already been booked so anyone wishing to book a room is encouraged to do so as soon as possible.

2. Φάρμα Projekt (Farma Project), Kampia village

A one night musical extravaganza

Drive out of the urban hub which is Nicosia and head towards Kampia village in the Machairas mountains area and soon enough, you’ll find yourself in a gorgeous green haven. And somewhere in this bucolic setting is Angel’s Hills Agrotourism resort, with the outdoor grounds of this place set to host this year’s Farma Projekt yet again, on July 1st.



Organised by Three Cocks Down, the one-night event will see five different stages hosting DJs working their magic alongside a whole host of live performances by a variety of acts like Giannis Koutis featuring Ravi Saundankar, Black Anis, Monika and more. Then there will be DJs working up a party atmosphere in The Kennel, The Arena, The Tomb, The Jam and The Chill, with names including Mop Mop. Luigi Tozzi, Pueblo Franco & The Mighty Scoop, Mpakallis and many more!



You can also expect fabulous cocktails, fantastic aesthetics and creative installations, and impressive lighting brightening up the surrounding nature, with nothing but the mountains providing a backdrop to the party madness. And there’s plenty of room for camping too!

3. Afro Banana Republic Festival, Kornos

Deep into the magic and beyond!

What do you get when a huge dose of spine tingling music, a dash of rousing art and heaps of otherworldly aesthetics come together in the dreamiest forest location, all shaken up with a brilliant touch of magic and surrealism? The ABR Festival! The highly anticipated EFFE award winning Afro Banana Republic (ABR) Festival will be bringing Kornos Forest to life for three days this July 7th, 8th and 9th.

The biggest event in its seven year history will see top class award winning international acts jetting in to the island perform side by side a handpicked selection of leading local musicians, with four different music stages, featuring over 35 musicians including 15 live bands mesmerising audiences with an explosive kaleidoscope of genre-defying sounds accentuated by artistic interventions, creative workshops, theatre performances and much more.

The highlights on this year’s agenda are countless, from the acclaimed Amsterdam based Jungle by Night and the renowned multi award winning British jazz and rap performer, Soweto Kinch, to the Canalón de Timbiquí trio who will be jetting in from Colombia for a high-octane performance, while the acclaimed Anchorsong will also be landing down in Cyprus to work ABR crowds into a wild frenzy. And that’s not to forget the Dutch Tom Trago, UK’s Kutmah and many more world class DJs adding to the thrill of the occasion.

With a mix of local talents also taking to the ABR stage, great attention has also been placed on creating a truly immersive and collective experience, giving you and the kids the chance to discover and enjoy totally new creative and interactive experiences. 4. Fengaros Festival, Kato Drys

Bringing an entire village to life

Arty, inspirational, multi-dimensional and uncompromisingly cool, the Fengaros Festival  is one of the absolute highlights of the summer, bringing all things alternative to the beautiful Kato Drys village as the organisers at Louvana Records introduce new incentives to really keep crowds on their toes…and begging for more!

Set to take place this year between August 3rd and 5th, we’ve marked the dates long ago and will be joining people from around the country to enjoy an atmosphere steeped in tradition as one of the island’s most picturesque villages springs to life. Presenting fresh and original music from around the world, you can look forward to three different stages: the Field Stage, the Village Stage and the Church Stage.



Each with their own distinct character, there’s never a dull moment at Fengaros, with more than 35 acts set to whisk you away in a musical frenzy. Jetting into Cyprus from all of the world, the line-up this year is certainly inspirational, with everyone talking about the highly-anticipated arrival of Fantastic Negrito from the US, winner of this year’s Best Contemporary Blues Album at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards. Then there’s Bombino, Xylouris White, the Villagers of Ioannina City, Monsouir Doumani and countless other acts to get your toes tapping and hips swaying!



All about fostering creativity and encouraging the exchange of ideas and experiences between artists, the festival will also include the now well known ‘Fengaros Music Village’ between July 27th and August 1st, with ten music, storytelling and architecture workshops as well as an artist residency.

5. Windcraft Music Festival, Katydata

A cool twist on tradition

A really unusual festival that brings the idyllic Katydata village to life, this two-day event (the fourth annual event of its kind) with a focus on wind instruments, will see music loving crowds descend on the area to listen to some great jazz and ethnic music, presenting a fresh and alternative approach to tradition.



With Katydata nestled deep in the Solea valley (on the north side of the Troodos Mountains), the Windcraft Music Festival totally transforms the normally quiet village, with a variety of local and foreign bands coming together to play in really picturesque locations including the yard of the village’s old inn, the village orchard and other great spots. You can expect a blend of music and fusion of sounds with a focus on wind instruments, featuring all sorts of bands and new collaborations from Cyprus and beyond.



Concerts will combine with workshops and other creative activities, for both adults and children. Whether you fancy a walk in the village or to catch a glimpse of traditional crafts being made, there will be plenty to enjoy. And what’s really great about the event is that village folk partake in all the celebrations too!



As for accommodation, you can set up a tent in a free campsite, or put your feet up for the night in various agrotourism hotels in traditional villages scattered around the area. The exact festival line up has not yet been published so do keep check of their facebook page for updates.
