And things are now looking (and tasting) better than ever, with cool new spots having worked up a reputation for dishes with a real alternative flair, whether you fancy a spicy Middle Eastern feast, a vegan health kick, or the most naughty but nice homemade ice cream with a swig of some of the best coffee on the island. My Cyprus Insider highlights some of our absolute favourite new kids on the block in this food lover’s paradise!

1. Bakery Gourmet Kafeneio: For lovers of all things deliciously healthy

If there’s one place that absolutely everyone has been talking about lately, it has simply got to be Bakery Gourmet Kafeneio. The name of the place might sound a confusing: is it a bakery? Is it a coffee shop? Does it dish up gourmet food? Let’s get things straight right from the start – this establishment specialises in vegan and vegetarian fare! And although some of you may immediately be put off by the idea, let’s make another thing clear: most people – even meat eaters – usually leave with a massive smile.

Described by the establishment as a coffee shop with a twist, it’s certainly not the place to head to for a traditional instant coffee frappe. Instead, prepare for a green and healthy twist on just about everything: one mint and pistachio iced matcha latte please!

When it comes to delicious eats, you may like to tuck into their open face sandwiches (think ricotta, arugula and egg or thyme roasted nectarines on vanilla mascarpone). Then there’s salads, wraps, daily specials, smoothies, cakes with a healthy twist, energy bars, and the list of gastronomic delights goes on. Do take note that this place is only open during the day, and is the perfect spot for breakfast, brunch, lunch or an early afternoon bite or drink!

Where? Sachtouri, Limassol. Tel: (+357) 25 106881. 9am – 4pm.

2. Yasemin: A dreamy touch of the Middle East

Having opened its doors a few months ago, Yasemin specialises in some seriously fine and delicious eats. Located in the hub of Limassol’s old town where cool kids mingle with a sophisticated older crowd looking for a top dining experience, the place is a real mix of all things traditional and modern, with classic old tiles complemented by minimalist lines and neutral earthy colours.

Middle Eastern influences reign supreme here – although it’s officially fusion cuisine – and you can either pick your own dishes or opt for the meze menu. Expect great dips, starters like falafel and the must-try cheese and spinach borek, mouth-watering salads, freshly baked bread and a selection of mains to leave anyone begging for more. From their Salmon Hara (Tripoli spiced fresh salmon fillet with tarator salsa, green herbs, chives, walnuts and aromatic rice) to their lamb chops marinated with herbs and mustard truffle potato pewaz salad, it’s all rather divine! All this, coupled with top quality wines- cheers to that!

Where? 287 Ayiou Andreou St, Limassol. Tel: (+357) 25-222033. 6pm-11.30pm.

3. Uluwatu Speciality Coffees: An ice cream treat & caffeine kick unlike the rest

Forget the run-of the-mill coffee joints you may be accustomed to; speciality coffee meets fantastic desert at this super cool new Limassol joint all about artisan coffee and gourmet sweet treats. Right on the busy and central Anexartisias Street, the aroma of Square Mile coffee will rouse your senses before you even walk in, with the Uluwatu Speciality Coffees staff ready to cater to your every caffeinated whim, with high quality single origin coffee from around the world to delight you.

And once you get hold of your desired cup, kick back in the retro chairs or the leather sofa, relax to the sounds of cool music and flick through the French Purple magazine. And what’s a caffeine fix without a sweet treat? Their ice cream is heavenly, as are their artisan milk shakes. The good news is that the place also recently launched a new home made dessert series, by a variety of reputed chefs!

Where? 10 Anexartisias St. Tel: (+357) 25-222191. 7.30am-8pm.
