Lefkara is renowned as one of Cyprus’ most beautiful and picturesque villages where tradition takes you back in time around every turn, but recently, a different crowd is breathing new life into the village, giving the whole place a cool and alternative edge. From hip wine bars to quirky shops and modern wineries, here are 5 places you’ve got to add to your Lefkara bucket list!

1. 1923 Stone Lounge

A taste of tradition meets all things modern in this cool retro inspired place with brilliant tiled floors and mix and match pastel coloured wicker chairs all set within a lovely old stonebuilt building. Whether you’re after coffee and cake or a lunch time treat, 1923 Stone Lounge is a cozy place in the centre of the village that really hits the spot. Take note of the chalk board that always lists their ‘specials’, whether you fancy a pork chop, grilled chicken, souvlakia or a lamb shank.

Love salads? They are as fresh as can be, using homegrown produce. We highly recommend their stuffed baguettes – think bacon, ham, halloumi, green pepper, onion and tomato – and their desserts are rather heavenly too; from their cinnamon and cream cheese buns to their divine chocolate brownie. They establishment also serves healthy Cypriot platters with bread, halloumi cheese, salad and more. Fancy a family day out and want to take the little ones along with you? This place is ideal, with an outdoor play area where they can unleash all of their energy!

2. Green Village Lefkara Shop

Lefkara has always been known for its traditional shops brimming with lace and silverware as the ladies of the village busy themselves with traditional textiles, but only recently have people been reviving traditions and giving them a modern twist.

Green Village Lefkara Shop is a quirky and cool little treasure trove selling clothes and accessories incorporating traditional Lefkara textiles, as well as handmade 1950s inspired fashion. Whether you’d like to get hold of a unique clutch bag, or a dress to add the wow factor to a special occasion, this little shop is a great place to visit if you’re after alternative fashion.

3. Proti Stagona

An all-day café and wine bar,  ‘Proti Stagona’ is a real gem of a place, with exposed distressed walls giving way to an area lined with wine bottles, dozens of photos hanging from the ceiling and mismatched old fashioned furniture. Having fused all things traditionally Cypriot with a modern touch, the place serves bites, platters and drinks that draw on local tradition. There’s also a lovely garden patio where you can kick back, with views of the village and the Lefara Holy Cross Church.

Their two cocktails, ‘krasento’ and ‘commandaroma’, use local wine and commandaria (local sweet wine), while the tea on offer is made with herbs grown on the island. As for nibbles, there are platters to enjoy, including pitta bread with halloumi and tomatoes, yoghurt with local honey and walnuts, sweet and savoury waffles, and a special homemade carrot cake on Sundays. Brunch is also served on a Saturday with platters, cakes, homemade olive pie and more. And do check their facebook page for upcoming live music nights!

4. Lefkara Coffee Yard

As the name of this place suggests, all the action takes place is a lovely yard in the spring and summer months, right in the centre of Lefkara village. And what’s really great is that the area is shaded by a thick overhead vine, providing a little welcome protection from the tremendous glare of the summer sun. With breakfast, snacks, pizzas and salads to tuck into, most people rave about the burgers served with homemade fries at Lefkara Coffee Yard.

Head here early in for the first meal of the day and take your pick from traditional Lefkara or English breakfast. Then there are cocktails to sip, smoothies to slurp and plenty of frappes to  wake the senses; cheers!

How about sipping on some local wine while exploring the area? This place is not new but many people still don’t know that Lefkara is home to one of the most stunning wineries in the country just outside the main village centre, blending stark modern and traditional design that blends in with vineyards and surrounding rolling hills.

Open to all wine lovers that would love to taste some fine red, rose or whites, head to Ktima Dafermou and you’ll also have the chance to get to find out more about the world of wine on the island, the variety of grapes grown in the area, the techniques used, and the wine production process.
