The weather is finally starting to seriously warm up, the countryside is blanketed in vibrant green and brimming with colourful flowers, and if you’re after a real adrenaline rush, there are plenty of sporting occasions to delight you in the coming weeks and months under brilliant blue skies. Read on as My Cyprus Insider gives you the lowdown on some of our favourites!



1. Dorians Challenge

Organisers proclaim that you’ll be ‘conquering obstacles the world has never seen,’ and it certainly looks as though it’s set to be one of the biggest sporting events of the year. Not your typical sporting race or event by any means, Dorians Challenge will soon be luring all fun loving and sporty types to the CTO beach in Larmaca with a series of themed obstacle runs and races inspired by the ancient Greek Dorian tribe, Greek mythology and history, as well as leading international obstacle course events.



Whether you choose to take part in the original Dorians Challenge run of 5km and 20 obstacles, the Dorians Coastal Challenge with 20 obstacles by the coast and in shallow waters, or even, the Dorians Survival Challenge, adrenaline levels are set to soar. As the name of the event suggests, all runs and races are challenging, making you crawl, run, cross, swim, carry, lift and pull your way to the finishing line!

2. Logicom Cyprus Marathon

If a run around the historic city of Paphos sounds like your idea of fun, then the Logicom Cyprus Marathon is the place to be this coming weekend, with over 2000 runners set to gravitate towards the town that is currently enjoying its status as European Capital of Culture.



Consisting of four different races, there are only tickets for the half marathon and 5km fun run left, so do hurry to register if you’d like to take part. Both the Half Marathon and 5km Fun Run will start and finish at a really scenic location just by the Pafos Medieval Fort Square.

3. OPAP Limassol Marathon

Love the idea of your heart pumping by the deep blue of the Med? The 11th OPAP Limassol Marathon is another great event on the 2017 Cyprus sporting calendar, as thousands of sporty types from near and far descend on the seaside town come March 18th and 19th for one of the island’s most talked about occasions of the year.



The 11th event of its kind, you can expect everyone and anyone taking part, from real pros to amateurs who just love to run for fun. An essentially flat race, the event includes a Marathon, Half Marathon, Petrolina 10km Health Race, PrimeTel 5km Corporate Race and McDonald’s 1km Kids Race. Organisers emphasise that the flat traffic-free route is ideal for all runners and participants, giving each and every one of you the chance to achieve your personal best. 4. Cyprus Gran Fondo 2017 powered by Volkswagen

This 3 day ‘Cycling for All’ event enticing sporty types to weave their way through the Cyprus countryside on two wheels, the Cyprus Gran Fondo 2017 will be taking place the last weekend of March for the 6th year running. The event will see both professional and amateur cyclists ride shoulder to shoulder, through beautiful villages and up to the peaks of the Troodos mountains, giving all participants the chance to make the most of the glorious outdoors in the spring time.



With three different routes, each course is designed to offer a different challenge, and will take riders through some of the most picturesque spots on the island, starting off by the glistening blue of the Med on each day. From Kouklia to Curium, Paphos castle to Peyia, Kathikas to Kritou Terra, each course offers something to suit all types of cyclists, set to challenge and excite all road cycling enthusiasts.

5. Petrolina Klirou Atovrisi Running Challenge

If an idyllic and invigorating run through nature is your kind of thing, then you’ll want to sign up for the 6th annual Petrolina Klirou – Atovrisi challenge, organised by Dro.Me.A Racing  along with the Klirou Community Council. Set to entice sports lovers from across the island towards the glorious Klirou countryside on April 23rd, the race will be starting and finishing at the central Klirou Village Square. Promoting the importance of recreational sports for all ages, the occasion will also be aiding a very worthy cause, as participants will have the opportunity to make donations in support of Europa Donna.



With a real mix of activities for all ages to enjoy, there’s a 12 km cycling race, a children’s 400 metre road race, a 12km cross country race (open to anyone over the age of 18), a 4km bike race, a 4km cross country race (open to anyone over the age of 18) and a Europa Donna health walk. Keep in mind that during the event, organisers will be boosting your energy levels with free delights for you to nibble on.

6. Ayia Napa Triathlon

`With one of Cyprus’ most idyllic beaches forming a glorious backdrop to this event, one of the island’s most talked about and undeniably beautiful beaches is soon to become a sporting focal point as the Nireas Ayia Napa Triathlon lures crowds to the glorious east coast, giving you the chance to swim, bike and run, all in one occasion!



With three different courses for different skill levels, organisers emphasise that the race is open to everyone and anyone, whether you’re a beginner or a pro athlete. Can’t make it to the Ayia Napa triathlon? Keep in mind that Larnaca will also play host to the Nireas Triathlon on May 7th. Stay tuned for more news!
