Sunkissed skies, elegant palms and shimmering cerulean seas are easy to come by in Cyprus. But when you combine the beauty of the Paphos coastline with dreamy minimal design and possibly the most beautiful swimming pools on the island, you know that you have arrived at the Almyra.

A true Mediterranean gem on the island’s dramatic western coastline – close to the historic harbour and castle area –  Almyra is renowned for its chilled-chic design, accentuated by a touch of playfulness. A haven of all things cool and contemporary, its elegant and stylish (yet undeniably simple) approach to Mediterranean luxury has earned the five-star hotel a place on the list of world Design Hotels.

And now, having recently re-opened its doors following the lockdown period, it welcomes love birds, families and friends in need of some time out, into a world of carefree Mediterranean living with a contemporary twist. The opening follows extensive renovation during the winter months, with all enhancements overseen by leading French designer, Joëlle Pléot.

If you have previously visited the hotel, once you walk through the entrance – complete with gorgeous water features and signature olive trees – you’ll notice that the lobby has been refreshed with brand new bespoke furniture and lighting.

But it’s the updated rooms and suites that really stand out – meticulously revamped with custom-made furniture in Pléot’s signature sleek style. Think clean lines and varying shades of blue inspired by the Mediterranean Sea that surrounds the island. In keeping with Thanos Hotels and Resorts’ commitment to the community, local artisan craftsmen have been entrusted to create handmade oak and olive tree tables and accessories and other soft furnishings using silk and leather. Artwork by local photographer, Michalis Kouloumos, depicting scenes from the Paphos seafront has been placed in all bedrooms.

We were lucky enough to enjoy the Seafront Kyma Suite – just few steps away from the water’s edge. The views are dreamy and the space is sleek. And the best part? The moment that you step out of your room and private terrace, you can enjoy your own private sunbeds on the lawn (perfect for quality time with your other half).

While you may be tempted to laze in the comfort of the lovely rooms (and we really don’t blame you), rest and recuperation also come easy at the award-winning Almyra spa where innovative treatments melt away any stress, all featuring marine-based OSEA and medical-grade QMS products, as well as ingredients from the Almyraspa garden. Step outside to enjoy a refreshing splash in the pretty infinity pool, with a deep blue that merges with the azure seas beyond.

When the hunger pangs kick in, the Almyra will delight even the most discerning gastronome. Enjoy the best of Cypriot and Greek specialties by the water’s edge under flowering pergolas at the Ouzeri come lunchtime, where living and eating is easy and delicious!

For the greatest treat of all, delight the palette at Notios, Almyra’s signature Japanese-Mediterranean fusion restaurant, which has just received the Top Notch Award at the Toques d’Or Awards 2019. A real al fresco dining extravaganza, the explosive mix of tastes is as satiating as it is surprising, while the venue itself is the ultimate casual-chic dining spot with panoramic views out to sea.

If you wish to immerse yourselves in the local environment, history and culture, there are also some great experiences on offer. Nature lovers can connect to all things earthy and pure – try your hand at picking and pressing olives into oil, harvesting grapes (and sampling their fermented juice!) during a winery visit, collecting plump figs, mangoes and guavas, or creating memories with a pomegranate workshop (really!) and cookery lesson.

Want to feel the pulse of Cyprus’ rural heart? Let the Almyra take you deep into village life with a two-day excursion. And if the sun sparks your creative flame, you can fan the fire of inspiration during a two-hour masterclass with Katerina Foukara and Arsenty Lysenkov – two of Cyprus’ most environmentally focused artists. If you want to get better acquainted with the beauty that lies beyond Almyra, head out a tour day adventure to explore abandoned villages, venture into wooded gorges, swim crystalline waters, taste local food and wine and much more. And if wining and dining are at the very top of your agenda,  there are numerous tailored experiences to enjoy. Visit vineyards, meet passionate winemakers, indulge in the finest local whites, rosés and reds and delight your taste buds with local delicacies.

What was our favourite experience of all at the Almyra? Hands down, watching the sun go down. Paphos is the place to see the day turn to night, but witnessing the sky light up from the minimalistic Almyra al fresco rooftop lounge is a heavenly experience. Sunsoaked summer bliss at its best!
