Nicosia may not be the greenest city in the world, but there are certainly a few beautiful spots to escape to and breathe in the fresh air. Just follow the My Cyprus Insider lead and enjoy a little escape close to home!

1. Nicosia Municipal Park

Often overlooked and certainly underrated, this lovely park right in the centre of Nicosia – behind the Parliament – is an ideal spot to head to for an after-work break. It’s not ideal for anyone looking to enjoy some serious exercise, as it rather small, but groups do congregate here to enjoy al fresco yoga. And it’s ideal for the kids too, featuring a fully renewed and equipped playground area. And once lockdown ends, the on-site vegan establishment serves plenty of refreshments and healthy tasty treats. The kids will also love the birds, and ponds with goldfish and fountains, while nature lovers will be impressed with the little cactus garden and countless towering palms.

2. Athalassa Park

Just take a short drive out to Athalassa Park and you can enjoy a real change of scenery in no time.  Cocooned by the suburbs of Aglandjia, Strovolos, Latsia and Geri, it’s a fantastic place for city dwellers to break up the day-to-day routine by taking a long walk through one of its designated routes. The place fills with happy cyclists and runners in the late afternoon and weekends, while those wishing to take their beloved pooch out for a few hours are in luck, with a special dog-walking path to enjoy. If you love nothing more than a ramble by the water’s edge, keep in mind that part of the park (Agios Georgios) is also home to its very own lake, encircled by a walking path that will give you a little lift and get your heart racing. Stop off by the bird observatory right by the lake to take in the splendour of this oasis in the city.

3. Famagusta Gate Moat

Head to one of the nicest areas in old town Nicosia and a spot with a real tale to tell, as you take a look at the old walls surrounding the city built between 1567 and 1570 by the ruling Venetians. And behind these imposing walls and gate, you can kick back on grassy areas dotted with palm trees, often used for weddings or concerts in the summer months. Your beloved four-legged friends are also allowed to join!
