A few years ago, Cypriots suddenly developed a fascination with brunch, with just about every restaurant imaginable adding brunch time treats to their menu. And now, there seems to be an obvious turn to tradition, as an increasing number of establishments add a traditional Cyprus flair to their morning treats, drawing on the veritable smorgasbord of delicious local ingredients. The foodies on the My Cyprus Insider team have narrowed down three of our favourite spots in Larnaca, giving new meaning to breakfast in local style!

1. Λαζαρής – Lazaris BakeryBar

One of the latest additions on the Larnaca breakfast scene, this trendy little place is located right in the centre of the seaside town, next to the well-known St Lazarus church. Take a seat at this modern version of a traditional ‘kafenio’ (old-fashioned coffee shop) and indulge in traditional treats and bites, with freshly baked bread and pies to satiate your taste buds, including tahini, halloumi and olive pies.

If you’re after a full breakfast, Lazaris BakeryBar offers a Cyprus breakfast with village bread, egg (whether you like it hard-boiled or fried), lounza (smoked pork), olives, tomatoes and halloumi cheese.

Where? 37-39 Ayiou Lazarou, Larnaca. Tel: (+357) 24-655700

2. To Café tis Chrysanthis

In the maze of old streets behind Larnaca’s busy Finikoudes Promenade – right next to the old market/outdoor car park of Larnaca – head to the very popular and cosy Café tis Chrysanthis for a sumptuous breakfast with a real Cyprus twist.

Their ‘Cypriot Breakfast’ is one of the café’s many all-day breakfast options, and includes fried or scrambled eggs, traditional Cypriot ‘loukaniko’ (sausage), grilled halloumi, lounza (smoked pork), and grilled tomatoes, with toast on the side. And if you’re after a sweet treat at the end, this is the place to be, with homemade cakes, as well as plenty of pancakes and waffles on offer!

Where? 1 Ifaistou St, Larnaca. Tel: (+357) 24-256262

3. Mingle Café

Located on the busy Ermou Street, Mingle Café is the cool restaurant of Qbic City Hotel, growing in popularity day by day as word spreads about their fabulously creative breakfast and brunch. Add to that the funky décor, and it’s a truly winning combination!

With a menu inspired by Cyprus ingredients, we love their halloumi burger for a really alternative morning treat; a halloumi patty in bread bun topped with egg and bacon. Absolutely divine! With plenty of vegan and gluten-free options on the menu, their Cyprus inspired treats are also worth a mention. Our suggestion? Go for their anarokrema! A modern reconstructed Cypriot cheesecake made with Anari cheese, served with sweet fig delight and crushed pastelaki!

Where? 153 Ermou St, Larnaca. Tel: (+357) 24-209300
