Food truly is king in Cyprus and locals look for any excuse to sit down for a feast! And during the hot summer months, Nicosians who remain in the capital often head to the nearest casual souvlaki (kebab) joint with a garden to kick back with their favourite summer food and a cool beer in hand. My Cyprus Insider has narrowed down a few of our favourites in the city.
1. Chrysaliniotissa Gardens
When Nicosians think of souvlaki in a lovely garden, there’s one great place that often comes to mind: Chrysaliniotissa Gardens in the Taktakala area of old town Nicosia. Right next to the buffer zone, Chrysaliniotissa Gardens is known for its chilled-out atmosphere amidst greenery and stunning old city surrounds. Only open in the spring and summer months (once the weather warms up), locals swarm here for simple and traditional grilled dishes, where the kabab takes centre stage!
Where? Athenas Avenue, within the park. Tel: (+357) 22-343447
2. Souvlakia Orfeas
Not to be confused with the old Nicosia restaurant right next to our previous entry, this haunt in the Aglandjia area of Nicosia has been a local hotspot for decades! Take a seat outside within the fenced garden area at Souvlakia Orfeas and enjoy a juicy kebab or pork chop, with plenty of side dishes on offer and vegetarian options – including their divine mushrooms and salads. The chips are freshly cut and the vibe is always pleasant.
Where? 5 Athens St, Aglantzia. Tel.: (+357) 22 337788
3. To Parko
Looking for a place to eat surrounded by lush trees? The Parko which translates to “the park” is far from your typical restaurant, with tables and chairs strewn across a small Archangelos district park. Eucalyptus trees provide great shade, and the little ones have plenty of space to play if you’re planning a family outing. Enjoy your traditional souvlaki and sheftalia in great portions, and wash it down with your cool summer tipple of choice.
Where? Alexandrou Panagouli, Archangelos. Tel.: (+357) 22 371558
