Lazing on the beach in the summer months with family and friends is all well and good, but what happens when you want to take your beloved pooch to enjoy the fun along with you? There aren’t very many spots where you can let your dog swim in the sea – with dogs banned from most public beaches – but My Cyprus Insider has narrowed down five great spots for you and your four-legged friend to have a splashing good time, outside the hub of the main seaside towns!
1. Spyros Beach, Larnaca district
In close proximity to Larnaca airport, the water here is shallow and clean, and the quiet sandy beach is ideal for young ones to get busy building sandcastles. An added plus is that you’ll be able to enjoy watching the planes taking off and touching down at the airport!
2. Steratzia, Kato Pyrgos
Drive towards the village of Pyrgos in the Kato Tylliria area, and you’ll soon discover that it’s one of the most peaceful spots you can possibly head to for blissfully quiet summer days. The secluded beach isn’t on the map, and in order to find it, ask one of the locals to guide the way and they are likely to be more than happy to have a good old natter!
3. Acheleia, Paphos
Northwest of Paphos airport at the mouth of the Ezousa River, this pebbly beach is a convenient spot to head to with your dog if you’re on the west of the island, with plenty of space for the whole family to splash about wild and free!
4. Prolimnos, Pissouri
With the whole of the Pissouri area and it’s rocky coastline ideal for avid explorers, veer away from the main village hub towards Prolimnos for a dog-friendly haven.
5. Glyki Nero A, Paralimni Municipality
A designated dog beach until the end of 2018, this small and sandy under the radar spot is located right near the buffer zone, away from the crowds that congregate in the rest of Protaras and Paralimni.
Dog owners are reminded to take responsibility for their dogs’ safety and to clean up after them in order to keep the beaches clean.
