As temperatures plummeted this January, avid photographers ventured out into the great outdoors to capture the outstanding beauty of wild winter landscapes. From the sparkling peaks of Troodos – perfectly dressed in a brilliant powdery white – to the rough and roaring seas on the island’s southern and west coastlines, we take you on a thrilling visual journey, showcasing some of our favourite photos recently published online.

1. Prodromos Dam, Troodos

It’s hard to believe that this is actually Cyprus; a hidden natural gem where shimmering water is so perfectly cocooned by lush greenery speckled with the first snow of the season. About 5 kilometres from Troodos Square (towards the highest village of the island, Prodromos), this fine dam is bordered by nature trails, with a picnic site nearby for moments of respite.

2. Panayia tou Araka, Lagouderia

The sky is usually a brilliant shade of blue when this gorgeous UNESCO Heritage church appears in tourist brochures and magazines. But this religious site, with its characteristic steep pitched roof, is just as enticing when photographed against a backdrop of darker and more dramatic winter skies.

3. Troodos Peaks

Nothing beats catching a glimpse of the snow on Cyprus’ highest peaks, almost 2000 meters above sea level, with Mount Olympus and its brilliant pines calling out for attention.

4. Edo III Shipwreck, Paphos sea caves

Whenever a big storm hits the island’s west coast, photographers often make a beeline for this well-known shipwreck to catch a glimpse of the drama. And with the wild stormy weather experienced at the start of January, the scene was one that could have stepped out of a movie.

5. Lefkara Dam

Most people have visited the picture-perfect Lefkara village, but few visitors are aware of just how beautiful the nearby dam is, especially when it fills with water in the winter season.

6. Larnaca Salt Lake

It’s one of the most highly photographed spots on the island for good reason: this stunning lake is home to the beautiful pink flamingo in the wetter winter months and they are certainly a pretty sight to see.

7. Molos seafront, Limassol

Usually calm and peaceful, when the winds pick up and winter storms sweep across the island’s south coastline, the Molos seafront and its promenades take on a completely different appeal.

8. Madari Nature Trail, Pitsilia region

Perhaps one of the most fascinating nature trails on the island, near the Madari Mountain peak with views across Morphou Bay and beyond, nothing beats crisp walks in the winter months when the area is saturated in lush and vibrant green.

9. Kouris dam, Limassol district

When the biggest dam on the island recently overflowed, it gave photographers the chance to capture the beauty of gushing water in stunning wintry surrounds.

10. Almirolivado, Troodos

This gorgeous spot hidden near the abandoned Amiantos mine is magical at any time of year, but when blanketed in white, the watery forest scene becomes totally otherworldly.
