All it takes is a short stroll around Cyprus’ quirky capital to notice the plethora of new and highly unique independent shops that are popping up around the old town and the central downtown areas.
Embracing its creative streak, Nicosia’s new wave of boutique retail opportunities is breathing fresh air into the capital while giving shopaholics a new wealth of potential window browsing experiences. My Cyprus Insider lets you in on a few of our favourite retail spots!
1. The Collective
Run by cool cousin combo Natasha and Paris, The Collective offers one of the best selections of vintage fashion and homeware in the capital. Professional rummagers, Natasha and Paris, hand select the items in the shop on their travels around the world and in an interesting twist of eco-sustainable fashion fate, they also work on consignment, selling your pre-loved items for you.
Most of the clothes, accessories, homeware, vinyls and some retro old bicycles are also available to buy online, but a trip down to visit the space itself is well worth the effort.
Where? 4-6 Palaion Patron Germanos (continuation of Grammou Str., off Ledra Str), Nicosia
Blurring the line between art gallery and shop, this beautifully curated space exhibits the work of around 20 different artists from Greece. Each of the unique pieces of art at Afaia is hand-picked with love by owner Roula Charalambous, who prides herself on selecting talented craftsmen and women with artistic integrity.
The collection of pieces for sale range from beautifully handmade jewellery and ceramics to quirky household ornaments and a tribe of colourful little wire fairies. No two pieces are the same, and she brings new works each season, so if you’re looking for somewhere to get one of a kind bespoke gift, this is the place to look!

3. Magos Record Shop
This tiny little hole-in-the-wall shop is easy to miss amongst the microbreweries and bars near Faneromeni School, but if you do spot Magos Record Shop (which you should try to) you’ll find yourself in a cosy little treasure trove of old and new vinyls and second hand turntables for sale at a range of affordable prices.
Magos – aka Constantinos – is not only visibly passionate about vinyl music, but he is also a fountain of knowledge on the comprehensive range of music he has for sale. Whether you are looking for the first album by ‘Derek And The Dominoes’ or the best of ‘Sly And Family Stone’, you’ll find something worth listening to at Magos’s place – just don’t ask him where he gets his collection – the vinyl master doesn’t reveal his sources!

4. Ant Comics
It may be the only comic book shop in Nicosia, but Ant Comics still has every animated character your inner comic book geek might be fantasising about. Run by the friendliest and most welcoming set of comic aficionados this side of Marvel Universe, the floor-to-ceiling lined shop stocks all the classic superhero books, Japanese anime art series, Sandman graphic novels and more.
Its location in a little nook in the alley beside Kala Kathoumena means it is also in a great neighbourhood to grab a coffee and settle down to read your new purchases.

5. Moondance Handicrafts
Crammed full of eclectic and colourful handmade jewellery, arts, crafts and clothing as vibrant and creative as the owner Popi herself, Moondance Handicrafts is a cute little cave of cool statement hippy wear that will bring any outfit to life.
Each of the pieces for sale at Popi’s secret corner of creativity is a little work of art in its own right, with earrings made of feathers, beaded dream catchers and beautiful rings and necklaces decorated with crystals, shells and colourful stones. This is a great pit-stop for anyone rocking a unique and eccentric sense of style.

6. Cos Art Repurposed
Way ahead of the current trend for up-cycling, the creative minds behind Cos Art Repurposed combine their love for the “old”, with impressive imaginations, to turn used items into new pieces of distinctive art.
Repurposing, redesigning, reusing, restoring and recycling all manner of items, the space’s unique and slightly eccentric collection of pieces include vintage baby prams turned into glass-topped tables, retro broken televisions turned into drinks cabinets and scratched vinyls turned into cool wall clocks.
