It’s gloriously sunny but not too hot, the countryside is blanketed in vibrant green, brimming with colourful flowers, and there’s quite simply no better time of year to enjoy the great outdoors! If you’re after a real adrenaline rush, there are plenty of sporting occasions to delight you in the coming weeks.

Larnaca triathlona


1. Dro.Me.A Racing – GSP – Klirou – Atovrisi: 12-Km Cross Country Race
A 12km cross country race organised by the Dro.Me.A Racing Running club will soon be drawing sporty crowds towards the glorious hills of Klirou, just outside Nicosia.

Starting and finishing at Klirou Central Square, the event is a real mixture of activities including a 12-km cycling race, a 400 m children’s race, a 12-km cross-country race for those aged 18 and above, a 4-km cycling race, a 4-km race for those aged 15 and above, and a health walk with Europa Donna.




The 12-km is indeed rather challenging – prepare for plenty of uphill before some more relaxing downhill – but if you’re fit, you’ll absolutely love the experience! If you prefer something slightly less intense, the other races should be right up your street, no matter what your skills and experience. After all, the occasion aims to promote sport for all ages, to all members of society, while also supporting the Europa Donna charity, helping to raise awareness about breast cancer. Keep in mind that during the event, the Klirou Municipality will be boosting your energy levels with free delights for you to nibble on.

2. Legion Run
It’s challenging, it’s wild, it’s dirty, and it’s fun. Oh yes, it has simply got to be Legion Run.You’ll splash about in cold water, jump over numerous obstacles, and quite possibly get to the finish line covered in mud. And if the success of the past two years is anything to go by, you can expect ‘an experience of a lifetime’.




Not really about ‘competing’ as such, it’s more about getting your friends, family or colleagues together for the thrill of it, to have a jolly good time. Set to unfold in and around a quarry in the Dali district outside Nicosia, you don’t really need to be super fit to take part, as long as you’re enthusiastic about a bit of wild fun and adventure. And when it’s done? You can cool down with your free beer, take some great snaps with your complimentary “I Am Legion” t-shirt, curb those hunger pangs with a bite to eat, and enjoy a good bit of music.




Keep in mind that you’ll be asked for your preferred ‘wave’ time during the registration process, with waves of 150 people every 15 minutes, beginning at 10am. Just be sure to give yourself enough time to check in and warm up! Don’t want to take part but still want watch the event? Organisers emphasise that the more spectators the merrier…after all, it’s a great chance to take a pic of all your muddy friends!

3. Volkswagen Cyprus Cycling Tour
“Ride like a pro, feel like a pro, live like a pro!” At least that’s what the organisers of the Volkswagen Cyprus Cycling Tour are saying! Expect three days of road cycling action in one of the most important annual cycling events of the year, with routes that suit all types of riders, set to challenge and excite all road cycling enthusiasts.




Coming to life between April 1st – 3rd for the fifth year running, the occasion will see amateurs and professionals ride shoulder to shoulder, climbing to new heights, and taking in the best of the island’s natural world.

Specially designed to be a challenging, interesting and beautiful course on all three days, participants will start off from Paphos Medieval Castle each day, riding up into some of the nicest mountain areas in the region and through many traditional villages and charming locations in the gorgeous west of the island.

4. Limassol Marathon
Love to run? How about running on a coastal road as the waves hit the shore? The 10th Limassol Marathon  is set to well and truly get your heart racing, as thousands of sporty types from near and far descend on the seaside town come April 10th for one of the island’s biggest sporting occasions of the year.




The 10th event of its kind, you can expect everyone and anyone taking part, from real pros to amateurs who just love to run for fun. An essentially flat race, the full Marathon Race starts off in the Molos area of Limassol, following the gorgeous coastal road towards Ancient Amathus, then onto Ayios Tyhonas and into the city centre. The 25th Km course then heads towards the new harbour and then back to the historical centre.




But if you’re not a pro, worry not, the event also includes a Marathon Race, Half Marathon, Petrolina 10Km Energy Race, 5Km City Race, PrimeTel 5Km Corporate Race and a McDonald’s 1Km Kids Race. Organisers emphasise that the flat traffic-free route is ideal for all runners and participants, giving each runner the chance to achieve their personal best. Just grab your running shoes…and go!

5. Nireas Ayia Napa and Larnaca Triathlons
One of the island’s most talked about and undeniably beautiful beaches is soon to become a sporting focal point as the Ayia Napa Triathlon lures crowds to the glorious east coast, giving you the chance to swim, bike and run, all in one event!




As stated by the organisers on the Nireas website, it’s all about reaching new heights, both mentally and physically. “People enter the triathlon looking for an exciting new challenge and by taking on the challenge discover a new lifestyle. We train to race. To race we need to consider not just fitness but also nutrition, equipment, mental stamina, psychology.”

The event is open to individuals and team relays, with only 300 slots available. The triathlon & team triathlon will involve a 1500m swim, 40km bike and 10km run, while the sprint triathlon & team spirit triathlon will involve a 750m swim, 20km bike ride and 5km run.




Can’t make it to the Ayia Napa triathlon? Keep in mind that Larnaca will also play host to the Nireas Triathlon on May 15th with a triathlon & team triathlon (1500m swim – 40Km bike – 10Km run) and sprint triathlon & team sprint triathlon (750m swim- 20Km bike – 5Km run).

6. La Sportiva Madari Mountain Madness Race
Head out for a really fun day up in Cyprus’ highest heights with a picturesque race through the Madari Trail organised by the enthusiastic team at the Get Out outdoor store in Nicosia. Set to take place on May 29th, the 15 km trail run is part of the 2016 La Sportiva Cyprus Mountain Running series which sees avid runners come together for an outdoor adventure unlike the rest.




With the event open to all skill levels, it will be starting and finishing at the very welcoming Adventure Mountain Park in Kyperounta, while the Madari trail itself has spectacular vantage points that will leave you wide eyed as you run. Boasting excellent views towards the Mesaoria plain and Morfou Bay, you’re also bound to be left awe struck by the impressive cliffs that make the trail even more stunning than most, as a whole host of varying rock formations call out for attention.

The trail is of medium difficulty, mostly following a downhill gradient through a dense forest dominated by the endemic Golden Oak, Cyprus Cedar and Calabrian Pine.
