As we well and truly wave goodbye to the long Cyprus beach season and welcome the cooler weather, it’s sometimes hard to know how exactly to entertain the kids in their spare time. But the truth of the matter is that autumn is a fabulous time of year to take the little ones out and about, with the milder temperatures giving the whole family the chance to comfortably enjoy the great outdoors. In this light, the My Cyprus Insider team have come across some great events set to take place in the coming days and weeks, providing plenty of excitement and bound to put a massive smile on the face of your little ones.
1. Golden Donkeys Farm 5 Years
Kids will be left grinning from ear to ear the moment they pet a loving donkey at the lovely Golden Donkeys Farm, and as the establishment celebrates its five-year anniversary, there will be heaps of activities for the whole family to enjoy on the October 28th public holiday.
There will be Cypriot songs to enjoy by the Mihalis Hadjimichael music group and traditional dances by the Perkalos group, while the Rural Women’s Association of Larnaca will be showcasing handmade Cypriot products. But kids will no doubt most enjoy the magic show and the donkey rides, while the whole family can tuck into a delicious Cypriot barbeque buffet. The more daring foodies can even indulge in treats made with donkey milk!
Where and when? Golden Donkeys Farm, Skarinou, Larnaca district. October 28th. 11am-5pm. Free entrance.
2. CyHerbia Halloween
Halloween is arriving early at Cyherbia Botanical Park & Labyrinth in Avgorou, where young ones can enjoy all sorts of thrilling action. Pumping carving will be heaps of fun, but kids will probably most love the fantasy games in the woodland, maze and herb gardens where they’ll be helping Vlad, the vegan vampire, find his food. Giant spider challenges also await in the woodland where little ones will learn the basics of flying a broomstick.
A mad scientist alchemy show and the best costume competition for children and adults will also add to the spooky affair. That’s not to forget the crime-solving activities and magic potions!
Where and when? Cyherbia Botanical Park, Avgorou. October 26th, 27th, 28th. Entrance to Cyherbia including all games: €5 adults and €3 children. Under 5’s free. Pumpkin carving workshop €8 per pumpkin. Book your place for pumpkin carving via message, email firstname.lastname@example.org or phone +357 99-915443. Pumpkin carving workshop times: 10am, 12noon, 2pm, 4pm on all three days.
3. Nicosia Street Quest
If you want to familiarise your older kids with the historic heart of Nicosia, then take note of a great evening event suitable for young teenagers hosted by CVAR on October 29th. The so-called Nicosia Street Quest will give the whole family the chance to navigate up to 20 location points on the Nicosia map, and answer simple non-cryptic questions about each location with a 60-minute time limit.
Each question, in turn, will be worth a certain number of points. You will need a pen to mark your answers on the question sheet and everyone is advised to wear comfortable walking/running shoes and light-coloured clothing (ideally reflective) for extra visibility. A small torch may be useful to assist your eyesight when reading the map. Children under 12 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.
Where and when? Starting at CVAR, Old Nicosia. October 29th. Registration opens at 7pm and closes at 7.45pm. Start times will be available half an hour earlier at 6.30pm for individuals with school children, all others between 7pm and 8pm. Last start time will be 8pm. Entry fees are €2 per person. Maps and question sheets will be provided at the start. For more information call +357 99-413479.
