With the countdown to Xmas in full swing, the young ones are no doubt getting super excited about what Santa will be bringing them this year. But Christmas isn’t just about getting the kids the right prezzies, it’s also about managing to keep them highly entertained throughout the holiday period! My Cyprus Insider is on hand with a few great ideas that should put a wide smile on their faces.

1. Christmas Fairyland, Nicosia

You can’t miss the Christmas Fairyland, with a brightly lit ferris wheel calling out to greet you the moment you enter Nicosia. Let the fun times roll with all sorts of fairground attractions and games to keep the young ones busy, while evenings include concerts by popular singers and bands from Cyprus and Greece.

This year’s Christmas Fairyland has a bit of a ‘Eurovision twist’, with scheduled performers including Eleni Foureira who represented Cyprus in this year’s competition and Elena Paparizou, who won the contest for Greece in 2005.  Pop by with the children for a little afternoon fun, and stay on until the evening to watch the whole place really come to life.

When and where? Strovolos, Nicosia. Open until January 6th.

2. Book Me!

With mobiles and tablets taking over everyday life, it’s getting harder and harder and get children to love books. If you’d love your kids to broaden their imagination with a good read, look no further than the Book Me! fair at the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation in the centre of the capital, on December 9. Organised in cooperation with the Soloneion Book Centre, the event will also give you the chance to get hold of great presents for the whole family.

Where and when? Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation, just off Ledra Street, Nicosia. December 9th.

3. Lighting up the Christmas Tree

Nothing screams Xmas more than a glorious Christmas tree! So how about taking the kids to see the biggest one in town? The Nicosia Municipality is hosting a ceremony aptly named Lighting up the Christmas Tree on December 8, full of all kinds of treats and entertainment for children!  Kids will be left giggling with clowns, people on stilts, fireworks, a fire show and, even, fake snow, while all the while adults can look forward to a choir performing Christmas carols.

Where and when? Eleftheria Square, Nicosia. December 8th. 5pm-8pm.

4. Limassol Christmas Land

With the Enaerios seafront forming a hub of activity this Xmas, young ones will love all the rides and games with carousel, train and horse carriage rides in the mix at the Limassol Christmas Land. Then there are bumper cars to enjoy and plenty of ‘North Pole’ snow games, as well as Santa’s Grotto. And as the young ones let off some steam, adults can enjoy chocolate and sweet workshops, as well as street food, mulled wine and hot chocolate!

Where and when? Enaerios seafront, Limassol.

5. Larnaca Chocolate Festival

Add a good dose of sweetness to the festive period by and take the kids down to the Larnaca Chocolate Festival taking place between December 21 to December 23. Chocolatiers from all over Cyprus will be displaying their finest creations here, along with chocolate face painting for kids, magicians, chocolate fountains, and of course, lots of free chocolate!

Where and when? December 21- 23. €3 for children under 15, and €5 for anyone over 15 years old.
